You are trapped- don't waste your energy...

OK- I'm stuck on Welsh bands, folks. I don't know what it is about all the great Welsh bands, but there's something there. Manic Street Preachers, Super Furry Animals, Catatonia, Mclusky, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci... the list goes on and I'm sure I'm forgetting a couple. And notice I did not include Stereophonics in that list.

And here comes another one that I've recently discovered- People In Planes. Straight out of Cardiff (population just over 300,000) they were inspired to start a band, apparently by listening to the classic Supergrass debut I Should Coco. It certainly seems as good or better an inspiration to get a band together as any to me!

Comparisons for this one to other bands don't pop up right away for me, but their sound and music has been described as lush and ambitious- and I'd say that's about right. Ambitious like British Sea Power, ambitious like Sigur Ros, ambitious like Super Furry Animals... only nearly completely different. Unlike the others, People In Planes seems just a bit less exotic, and more straight-ahead rockwise. But still different nonetheless.

I could almost make a Gomez comparison...

but I won't.

According to Insound:

AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE... is a richly atmospheric, sometimes challenging album that doesn't stint on inviting melody and anthemic choruses. In other words, this five-piece band from Cardiff, Wales traverses the long distance between visionary flights of imagination and simple rock pleasures as easily as, well, people in planes.

Here I am again listening to "Token Trapped Woman" as I type this and thinking to myself- "for crap's sake, what a fantastic tune! It's a bit hard selecting only a few of these tunes from As Far As The Eye Can See, but I'll give it a shot...

So I guess if they're coming to Raleigh in a few weeks, I should go see them?

I'd definitely check them out myself. I still can't quite come up with a band that they remind me of. They'll be playing Conan next Wednesday...
