Ashes to ashes...

Daniel Ash, that is. And David J. And a fire that burned their studio and work-in-progress album, resulting in the charred guitar on the cover. Most of the critical love for Love and Rockets is given to the albums Express and Earth, Sun, Moon, it seems- but I tend to believe that the 1996 release Sweet F.A. is an overlooked classic. Yeah, yeah- of course they're known for their 80s mega-hit "So Alive," and sure, it's a dynamite tune. But the psychedelic, fuzzy, sinister tone of the tunes on Sweet F.A. tend toward blissful. And throw in lines like "How many A&R men does it take to change a lightbulb? I'll get back to you on that" from "Shelf Life" or "Doesn't matter where you're going or where you're comin' from...or is your life just like a grain of sand... fuck all else" from the title track and you've got an album's worth of gems.

And on a somewhat similar note, I played JAMC "Reverence" on the jukebox in a packed bar last night. Priceless...
